Average Fence Installation Costs (2026)
Note: Prices are estimates per linear foot (installed) and include both materials and labor.
1. Wood Fencing
-
Basic Wood/Pressure-Treated: $20 – $45 per linear foot.
-
Western Red Cedar: $35 – $60 per linear foot.
-
Custom Horizontal Wood: $45 – $75+ per linear foot.
Why the range? Horizontal fences require more precise labor and high-grade lumber to prevent warping, making them a premium architectural choice.
2. PVC & Vinyl Fencing
-
Standard White Privacy: $30 – $60 per linear foot.
-
Textured/Wood-Grain Vinyl: $45 – $80 per linear foot.
Why the range? Height (6' vs 8') and decorative top accents (lattice or spindles) will increase the per-foot cost.
3. Ornamental Aluminum
-
Standard Black Aluminum: $32 – $70 per linear foot.
-
Heavy Duty / Industrial Grade: $70 – $100+ per linear foot.
Why the range? Pool-code compliant gates and specialized finishes (like bronze or hunter green) can add to the total.
4. Chain Link Fencing
-
Galvanized Steel: $10 – $25 per linear foot.
-
Black/Green Vinyl Coated: $15 – $35 per linear foot.
Factors That Affect Your Total Quote
-
Gates: Standard gates cost $400 – $1,200 each. Automated or extra-wide gates will be significantly more.
-
Terrain: Steep slopes or rocky soil require specialized "racking" and more labor, increasing costs by 10–20%.
-
Removal: Taking down and hauling away an old fence typically costs $3 – $7 per linear foot.
-
Permits; Local municipalities (Elgin, St. Charles, etc.) charge between $50 – $300 for fence permits.
-
Post Setting: Using extra-deep concrete footings or "wet-setting" for stability adds to the labor and material cost.
