Lombard Fence Rules & Compliance

Lombard’s building department is focused on safety and neighborhood aesthetics. We ensure your fence is 100% compliant from day one:

• Height & Placement: * Rear & Side Yards: Maximum height of 6 feet for standard privacy.

  • Front Yards: Maximum height of 4 feet. Note that chain-link is strictly prohibited in required front yards in Lombard.

• The "Good Side" Rule: Lombard requires that the finished side of the fence faces outward toward your neighbors or the street.

• Drainage & Clearance: To prevent neighborhood flooding and allow for maintenance, fences must maintain a 2-inch vertical clearance from the ground in grass or gravel areas.

• Pool Safety: If your fence serves as a pool barrier, Lombard requires a minimum height of 48 inches with self-closing and self-latching gates.

• Sight Visibility: On corner lots or near driveways, we ensure fences do not exceed 2 feet in height within the "Clear Line of Sight" triangle to keep pedestrians and motorists safe.
